Feltham Construction has started work on a £15m contract to demolish the backstage area of Reading’s Hexagon theatre and build a new studio theatre.

The area off Queen’s Walk in Reading will be transformed into a 200-seat theatre for comedy gigs and bands. Seating can be removed to create a standing space for 300 people, and there will be a gallery with more seating on the first floor.

The new building, designed by architects Haworth Tompkins, will provide improved backstage facilities for performers and crews and an upgraded technical area.

The project also involve decarbonising the Hexagon by replacing its boiler with a ground source heat pump.

Feltham Construction managing director Andy Brown said: “We are delighted to continue our successful relationship with Reading Borough Council on this exciting project that will cement arts and culture into the residents’ lives with a brand-new theatre.

“We will create a fantastic building that will be attractive and provide practical space for a mix of professional and community use. I can’t wait to see the final product.”

Shows will continue at the Hexagon after an 11-week hiatus for mobilisation, with a temporary back of house area set up in the adjacent Lavender Gardens

The new Studio Theatre is expected to be open to the public in spring 2027.
